Inside Art: Make a Funky Photo Frame Kids Project

WHAT DO YOU DO?

  • Cut two 15cm squares from the plain foam. Push your scissors blade through the middle of one square and cut out a square hole – don’t worry about making the edges even, it looks better if you makes the edges a bit wavy. Make the hole the right size for your photo as this is the front of your frame.
  • Cut a small rectangle from the remaining plain foam and cut a small circular hole in one end – this is the hanging hook. Attach it to the middle of the solid square of foam. We used a stapler, but you can glue it in place at the end if you prefer. (See Picture 1)
  • Decide on your design and cut out the shapes you need from the designer rainbow pattern foam. If you find it easier, draw the shapes first on the foam in pencil, the back of the rainbow foam is white, so it’s easy to see any pencil lines. Arrange your design on your frame and when you are happy glue the pieces in place (See Picture 2). Have a look at our examples to help you with some ideas. If you don’t want to wait for the glue to dry, be careful with the next step as your design will quite easily slide out of place.
  • Place the back of your frame hanging hook side down and glue along the bottom and 2 sides. Leave the top unglued so you have a gap to push your photo into your frame (See Picture 3). Place the front of your frame onto the glued back (make sure it’s the right way up first!) and push together. Leave to dry for at least an hour. (See Picture 4)
  • Slide your photo into place through the gap at the top of the frame. If you want to protect your photo, you can cut a square of clear acetate sheet from the A5 sheet and push it into the frame in front of your photo.
  • Now all you need to do is find a good place to hang your new funky frame.

As with all our projects, the originals are on show in the shop where help is also on hand. We would love to see the frames you make – come in and show us.
